With its heavy riffs and haunting vocals, Alice in Chains struck a powerful chord with their iconic track Would?, first released on June 7, 1992. Written by guitarist Jerry Cantrell in memory of his close friend Andrew Wood, the charismatic frontman of Mother Love Bone who tragically died from a heroin overdose, the song first appeared on the soundtrack of the movie Singles before becoming a standout on the band’s landmark album, Dirt. Cantrell's brooding verses and Layne Staley’s explosive chorus create a raw, emotional dialogue that captures feelings of loss, regret, and empathy toward those battling addiction. Would? reached number 31 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart in 1992 and climbed back up to number 15 on the Hot Rock Songs chart in 2019 after featuring prominently in Netflix’s The Punisher trailer. Its impactful music video, co-directed by Cameron Crowe and Josh Taft, snagged the award for Best Video from a Film at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards, cementing its enduring legacy.
