Commonly known among music fans as "Gentleman Jim," American country artist and singer-songwriter Jim Reeves began performing in the mid-1950s and built a successful career as one of the finest exponents of the Nashville Sound subgenre. Even though he had managed to position a handful of singles atop the US country charts in the early stages of his career, it wasn't until 1960 that he finally achieved crossover success with the single "He'll Have to Go," which topped the Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite his untimely death in a plane crash on July 31, 1964, many of his posthumous releases enjoyed great popularity in the US charts, including The Best of Jim Reeves (1964), Up Through the Years (1965), and Distant Drums (1966). The latter featured the Number singles "This Is It," "Is It Really Over?," and "Snowflake," a Ned Miller original that also made the Top 10 of the Canadian charts. Featuring winter-themed lyrics and Jim Reeves' gentle baritone voice, "Snowflake" eventually became associated with the Christmas tradition and remains one of the most popular songs in his catalog.
