"Wicked Game" is a haunting tale of infatuation and one of the moodiest pop classics in modern music history, a cultural phenomenon that has been covered by everyone from R.E.M and Mac DeMarco to Tori Amos and Céline Dion, as well as appearing in numerous movies, TV shows and commercials over the decades. In 2023, 34 years after the vibrato-rich original was unleashed onto the world and arguably changed the course of pop, Tenacious D—the comedy rock duo comprising Jack Black and Kyle Gass—had a stab at covering "Wicked Game" for a December 2022 SiriusXM live session. Chris Isaak probably never intended for his noirish "Wicked Game" to be served with a side order of high jinks and humour, but that's exactly what he got when Tenacious D recreated and released the song, which was duly accompanied by a goofy music video featuring slow-motion footage of the band wickedly raising hell on a beach.
